First Saturday Arts Market
For 10 years now, Mitch Cohen has produced a monthly art market in the Heights. There is always a wide variety of art forms from, in my opinion, the mundane and expected to the very impressive and surprising. It’s the latter that keeps me going back again and again.
For emerging collectors, it’s a very accessible entry to some great art in Houston – you don’t need to dress up, it’s free, there’s music and a very positive vibe.
This month, my favorites were the following.
John Delafield is a potter with a high quality product line. His prices are great and a strong buying opportunity. He’s participated in the FSAM for years and is a regular there.
Sergio Santos has also been around the Houston art scene a long time as a photographer but recently turned to painting to express himself. His rough/crude aesthetic has appeal and his pricing is appropriate. If you see something you like, just get it.
Lacey Crawford loves to paint and it shows. Crawford is one of those artists whose joy of the medium is apparent in her work. Sometimes whimsical, sometimes dark, but always narrative. As an experienced artist free of gallery representation, prices are very good for very good/great art.
Paul Kopecky is new to me but I wanted to include him just to show this one table of his.
Kimberly Schwarzkopf is a new artist and seems determined to break into the scene. Although in crowded company, Schwarzkopf stands apart from many due to some good technique in brush work and composition and, of course, use of narrative.

Linda Wagner is a jewelry maker that uses old/ancient wax seals in jewelry.
Kristen Kramlich is another jewelry maker with great work, priced very well. But nothing I could wear (grrr).
Jeanne Haner is the third jewelry maker I want to share with you. There’s not much for men here, but there is a little!
First Saturday Arts Market occurs monthly at 548 East 19th Street, 77008 from 11:00 – 6:00.
