Kelley Devine
Kelley Devine is a multimedia artist whose figurative work captured me long ago. Qualifying as an excellent draughtsman, Devine is not limited in scale; she works both small and large equally well. This is a mark of an experienced artist, being able to work both small and large. Frankly, I think the larger works are better developed in composition/concept (due to the greater amount of available space) and not at all suffering in the rendering of figures.
Of particular note is the first artwork shown below, “Seismic Shift”. This is one of those that doesn’t carry the impact on a computer screen. In person, the marks made by the seismic machine on the paper, the little solid black marks read as scales to my eyes. This is very fun surprise which is a very good thing; it just doesn’t show here very well. Also, the “Heads” are fantastic, surprising pieces that I’m in love with.
She recently completed the MFA program at HBU and is sharing her thesis here. Here is a visit with her from August, 2020. She currently has a studio at the Hardy & Nance Studios and is often participating in their open studios events on the third Saturday of every month.
