Lawndale Art Center: A Panoramic View-Texas Sculpture Group

The Texas Sculpture Group consists of about 125 members devoted to the sculpture as an art form. This exhibit was my introduction to the organization and it seems their primary emphasis is on contemporary work, not classical or minimalist. I’m glad Lawndale agreed to host the exhibit since all-sculputre exhibits are quite rare. The drawback, though, is that Lawndale doesn’t put prices on pieces or handle any sales; it’s not part of their business model. Therefore, I can just share some favorite pieces but not make any “buy” recommendations.

The strongest piece in the exhibit is Dylan Conner’s “Sewn In Space”. This site-specific piece is a perfect combination of scale, material and use of space. Seriously strong work as I expect from this fantastic artist!

My second pick is Carter Ernst’s “HOOT”. This is an 8-ft tall rendition of an owl. Yes, I’m enamored with a giant owl. With mirror eyes, too. It’s a very striking piece but placed in a weird location of the gallery.

Pushing the “contemporary” edge of sculpture is Gary Webernick’s “Camo-Cams 4”. This wall of motion-activated cameras come to life as you approach them. It’s wonderfully startling (and looks like a very complicated installation!).

Mary Morse’s “Beach Ladies VI-Sunbathers” appeals to me in that it’s a birds-eye view of people on a beach but it’s mounted vertically on the wall. The choice of bronze as the material was a smart one that I appreciate.

Nell Gottlieb’s “Volcanic” is very aquatic in feel but to look close and realize it’s made of ceramic and glass turns it into a surrealist-type piece. (This piece is actually on loan from our own collection, by the way.)
