Micah Simmons
Micah Simmons has been at Winter Street Studios since 2008. This coincides with the successful eye surgeries he had to correct his vision. Prior to 2008, Simmons created works he could see with his deteriorating condition. This meant large canvases, brushes and choppy brush strokes. It also meant commercial success and establishment of a good collector base. With vision brought to normal, his work changed as he felt comfortable with smaller pieces and brushes. Simmons shared with me a story of a collector that didn’t care for the “new style”. Isn’t that ironic? Improved vision results in disappointment?
Anyway, his work displays a wide variety of styles. Although this is typical of working artists, we spent quite a bit of time on this subject. I echoed conversations he has had with others in stating I responded favorably to some work but not all. These are enjoyable conversations for me but some artists take offense. Simmons does not. His maturity is evident in his approach to creating work and marketing it.
He is likewise level headed when it comes to commission works. He told me of a commission project he received in which a client wanted paintings of flowers. Although not a subject he would necessarily do under his own volition, he was open to satisfying his client.
His open, thoughtful visit was very enjoyable and I encourage you to stop by sometime and judge for yourself.
