Gallery M2: Paper Cuts II – Deeper

Gallery M2 hosted the second set of work selected by Patrick Palmer and John De La Cruz as the follow up to last month’s event. The same 33 artists have two more pieces in this exhibit. All are works on paper and 24″ x 24″ maximum. The range of artists is very large – some are in their first juried exhibit whereas some are well-established artists. The prices range from $100 to $1,300 and none are sold with frames.

The following works are my preferred pieces of the 66 on display:

Rachel Gardner’s experienced hand is apparent in her minimalistic portraits of wolves. Yes, wolves are the subject matter for a female artist. Her respectful treatment makes me wonder if she’s part Native American.

Troy Winscott’s narrative combines a working knowledge of myths with wit. What kind of artist has an evil looking woman (help me with the reference, please) in a chariot flying under the power of griffins? All while her pet lynx is devouring another griffin? If you talk to Winscott about his work, a sly smirk may cross his face as you try to figure out what he’s doing. He’s good at that.

Carlo Fantin’s media is Chinese cut paper which dates back to A.D. 30. It’s not a widely seen art form in Houston so just because we are seeing it in person, we should be excited. However, it’s Fantin’s subject matter that makes this piece worth talking about. The references are 3-fold: ancient Chinese media, Catholicism and hashtags. Yes, #’s! This piece definitely looks better in person.

Hillaree Hamblin has a wonderfully simple, paper collage I just kept getting into. And at $100 it will likely find a home.

Karen Lindeman’s pieces contain one dancing figure in a sea of layers of color. One sold on opening night and the other, at $350 is an easy decision for someone out there!

Sarah Fox is making you smile and get into her universe – unless your eyes are closed. Fox is not afraid to layer materials to a thickness greater than most everything in the exhibit. It’s a strong hand at work that’s supporting a strong, creative mind.

Richard Cutshall has a piece that really needs to be seen in person. The photo I took should make you want to see more from Cutshall.

Nataliya Scheib uses collage materials as the base material for portraits. This is a medium we’ve seen before but her technical abilities are definitely worth noting.

Huntz Liu is making geometric constructs from paper board but there are fine pencil lines around the shapes. They are small, intimate and have mass appeal.

Nancy Luton shows more HIGH quality mono prints. Although known for her support for the arts on a level far above most people, her work is so finely done, so well executed, that you don’t have to be an expert print maker to appreciate her work. A definite buy at $300 each.

The exhibit is up through August 31 at 338 West 19th Street, Houston 77008
