Aerosol Warfare: HTX Free Art Friday Extravaganza
In my/your life, there are VERY few opportunities to participate/observe a new art movement. The ways art is created and consumed are pretty tried and true, i.e. art on walls for sale and art online for sale. A little-experienced distribution method is to give work away either to fellow artists (in the form of a trade) or as a gift (to special people in their lives). The long history of art gifting continues today but now has intersected social media. THIS (video from the BBC) is a new art movement.
The Free Art Friday concept migrated from Austin’s SprayTX group to Hosuton via Tarboxx2 with help from Black Cassidy, IV281 and Gonzo247 (who happily hosted the one-night event at his space). It took a few years, but Houston now has #HTXFAF. You can participate every week by using social media (most participants are on Instagram) and keeping an eye on #HTXFAF to see what artist has put work out that you can race to!
According to IV281, the point of the event at Aerosol Warfare is to “…bring this idea they do every Friday, using Instagram, social media, to create a geocasching idea of hiding art and, if you go out and find it, you can keep it.” There were some artists giving away work in the spirit of the HTXFAF and most also had work for sale. These are cutting edge/new artists making work with various goals in mind. It’s easy to see those that are serious and exciting to talk to them. The prices ranged from $10-250 and some of the work was worth 10-fold that, at least. This was an amazing buy opportunity if you know what you like and you know what to look for.
