Record Ranch Gallery: 8th Annual Day of the Dead Rock Stars
Did you know Cactus Records has a gallery within it? Well now that you do, did you know they’ve had an annual print exhibit for 8 years now? To be honest, this was my first time there and now I’m sorry I’ve missed the previous years. This is a true testament to the insulator-type tendencies of the art scene. I saw the usual people I see at print-related events but not artists or collectors I see at other kinds of art events. I encourage anyone interested in the visual arts to stay open to all forms of visual art; otherwise, you’re just cheating yourself.
The works on exhibit varied from the expected to the surprising. There were of course prints framed behind glass. However, there are also many ‘mixed media’ pieces that elevated the quality of the exhibit to a very high level. I don’t think the average customer of Cactus Records will appreciate the complexity and through execution of some of the pieces. I’m not dissing those people, I’m saying that indeed, this is truly an exhibit of fine art in a place where people buy vinyl records. Quite a mix!
I offer a tip-of-the-hat to Carlos Hernandez for keeping this exhibit going. As co-founder of Burning Bones Press (that is about to move locations, btw), he continues to keep the profile of print making very high in Houston. Other artists patricipating are: Sean StarWars, Katy Seals, Christopher Wallace, Carlos Pozo, Dennis McNett, Alexandra Schwenke, Josh Higgins, Patrick Masterson, Ryan O’Malley, Eric Pearce, Amber Kaiser, Sophie McMahan, John Hancock, Charles Hancock, Coco Rico, Cathie Kayser, Carlos Hernandez, Brian Phillips
Cactus Records is at 2110 Portsmouth, 77098 and they are open Mon – Sat: 10:00 am – 9:00 pm; Sun: 12:00 pm – 7:00 pm. I do not know how long the work will be up.
